I was quite excited initially with all these new features Mail has to offer, however when the time has come (a few weeks ago) and I had to reinstall the Leopard, it was then when I realised how much hassle there is with backing up all emails. Even if all your Mail folder is backed up on your time machine – to restore all your emails will take you ages – if you like me, have large number of sub folders under your Inbox.
This was the time when I've realised that it's time to switch – and I got back to the Thunderbird – which I was using earlier on the PC.

The great thing about the Thunderbird is that to backup all your emails – including the folder structures, all accounts etc. – all you need to do is to copy the folder from the Library and after you've reinstalled your system simply copy it back to the same location – start up Thunderbird and everything looks as it was before. This is one of the main reasons why I'm sticking to Thunderbird.

Google Apps really simplifies the process of sending mail using your own domain from either Gmail or Thunderbird using POP or IMAP.

Using this method, you can save copies of your mail on your hard drive using Thunderbird and have a back up in your Gmail account.

My in box spam has been reduced from over 150 spam messages a day to maybe 1 per week. Gmail’s filters are by far the best I have ever used. I do have to go directly to my domains Gmail account periodically to check if any valid mail has been captured. But I have only found four good mails in my spam box in the past six months, none of which were vital to my business.

Gmail in conjunction with Thunderbird is the best combination by far. I have my own domain that uses Gmail through Google Apps using POP or IMAP.

I get the best of both worlds. Easier editing and sending of my mail through Thunderbird, plus the security, spam protection and ability to access my mail from any location using Gmail.

Many people do not realize that if you send and receive mail from your Thunderbird account using POP, it is all saved in your Gmail account as if you used the Gmail web app directly.

I have a problem sending a link from a website. Whenever I right click at a website to send the link, my outlook comes up with the link, I have to copy and paste on a new gmail email. I saw somewhere that you can do this by gmail wherein the link would come up on a new page gmail & send it that way.

I have not tried out Gmail yet - but most of the functionality is available in thunderbird with extensions. You may want to read thunderbird tipps.

If you want Google Apps for Your Domain it’s 100% free! You can go for the more premium package — but for most small businesses it works fine just how it is.

The only way I’ve heard of is to install Gmail on your own domain, a fairly technical thing that does cost you some $$$. If anyone has other ideas on this, let me know!
