Dave at SOBCon Colorado Sep 17-18, 2010

This weekend I’ll be out in Broomfield, CO at the Renaissance Boulder Flatiron Hotel for SOBCon Colorado, a conference that leaves my head spinning every single time I come near it.

My dear friends Liz Strauss and Terry Starbucker have been putting on their “Successful Online Business” or “Successful and Outstanding Bloggers” conference for years in Chicago. But this fall, they’re expanding “biz school for bloggers” to a second conference right here in my backyard.

Why should YOU attend? Here are 7 reasons:

  • 14 Hours of fantastic learning opportunities
  • Direct access to top Internet business minds and marketers
  • Immediate, actionable feedback for your business
  • A supportive community that will push you forward
  • The beautiful and inspiring Colorado Rockies
  • A “can do” spirit that is incredibly infectious
  • It will change your life

Bitwire Media will be live streaming the event on UStream if you can’t make it, and we’ll be putting together all kinds of interviews and inside tips for the WordCast Network.

Check out a few highlights from this year’s Chicago event below, or find out more about SOBCon Colorado at the official site.

I'm Not Dead Yet

Let me begin by saying loudly and obnoxiously that I AM NOT DEAD, despite how much that may have appeared to be the case lately. This blog post is a little update for you guys as to what I’m up to and where the heck I’ve been.

I’ve taken a little bit of a vacation the last couple weeks, and I mean a true vacation- I’ve been almost entirely offline and been able to spend some time simply thinking and living, which has become a bit of a traditional annual occasion for me.

It’s been absolutely fantastic, and I definitely have enjoyed the break. Being disconnected is slightly uncomfortable but also an extremely mind-clearing experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone who feels like they’ve been cluttered and confused or unusually unproductive.

However, it’s been long enough and I want my life (and, more importantly, my internet) back! I’m ready to kick off the fall with tons of energy. Here’s a little rundown of what to expect.

From August 27-29, I’ll be in Dallas speaking at OpenCamp, an exciting new conference that’s bringing together the best and brightest minds in tech and social media, without a focus on any specific content management platform. I’ll be talking about what the organizing team and I have dubbed “Podcasting Powerups.” Find out more at the official conference site.

Bitwire’s Lorelle VanFossen and all sorts of other big names and brilliant minds are also speaking, and the whole weekend is poised to seriously rock. I hope to see you all there!

Bitwire Media is kicking up a storm in the blogging, podcasting and radio worlds. As many of you have noticed, our WordCast Network of Blogging, Social Media and WordPress podcasts has scaled back a little bit through the summer months as we reorganize, revamp and renovate, but we’re almost ready to unveil some exciting new shows and features.

We’re also finally nearing the well overdue launch of Making My Life, a brand new, collaborative network of audio and video shows and community submitted content, all focused on improving your world and lifestyle, wherever and however you wish.

We’ve been working day and night for nearly a year with super cool, cutting edge web tech and are breaking all the rules when it comes to blogging, podcasting, and social media communities. To find out more and to get involved, you can check out Bitwire’s official blog post.

Also, If you’re interested in a peek behind the curtain of all these fun productions, check out these behind the scenes photos of our podcast and radio studio. Also, be watching for many new episodes of Bitwire: Behind the Scenes, which I host with Lorelle VanFossen.

My little vlogging career is continuing to be super fun. I’m sorry for the lack of videos lately, but I’ve got all kinds of fun stuff in the works so be watching for new content soon on my YouTube channel, and make sure you’re subscribed!

Thanks so much for putting up with my absolute lack of… anything. I’m excited to be getting back in gear.

VidCon 2010 Wrap-Up

July 9-11 in Los Angeles was the inaugural VidCon, a gathering of YouTubers from all around the country and the world. Over a thousand people attended and spent three days sharing, learning, laughing, plotting, and laughing (again).

The event featured all sorts of brilliant minds and big names like iJustine, Shane Dawson, Ze Frank, Jim Louderback, Shay Carl and Rhett and Link.

Plus, who doesn’t love huge swimming pools full of colorful plastic balls?

I had a great time, and want to thank Hank and John Green, the Vlog Brothers, for their hard work putting it all together, as well as Mischief Management and the entire volunteer team, which I was lucky enough to be a part of.

Fun People I Met and Mentioned in My VidCon Vlogs

PS. If you haven’t subscribed to me on YouTube yet, you need to. You’ll get all my videos right when they come out! And I won’t try to call you like Nancy Grace. Click here to avoid Nancy’s fate.

VidCon 2010

This summer has seriously been insane. I’ve been traveling more than I’ve been at home, which is absolutely exhausting but tons and tons of fun. Next up: VidCon in Los Angeles, CA!

If you haven’t heard about VidCon, it’s the largest gathering of YouTube video producers and viewers in history. The event is bringing thousands of YouTubers together to learn, share, and, of course, vlog in the company of some of the most famous and influential “celebrities” from around the YouTube community.

Tickets are now unfortunately sold out. Hopefully this isn’t the only year of VidCon, however, so maybe you’ll have another chance down the road if you didn’t make it in.

While I won’t be speaking at the event, I’m volunteering, and will be wandering around vlogging it upand hopefully meeting as many old friends and making new ones as possible. If you’ll be there, you’d BETTER find me!

Speaking at OpenCamp in Dallas

If you haven’t heard the news already, the crew behind last year’s WordCamp Dallas is taking on a new challenge, and it’s really exciting. The Dallas/Fort Worth area WordCamp, JoomlaCamp, and DrupalCamp meetups are all joining forces to create one amazing conference called OpenCamp.

It’ll be taking place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Addison, TX from August 27-29, and will feature all sorts of amazing speakers and panels about blogging, social media, audio and video, and more, including:

Wait… who’s that last one? Oh yeah, me! :) I’ll be talking about how to take a podcast to the next level. The unofficial title Cali and I have given the session is “Podcasting Powerups” because I’m going to be going over all sorts of tips, tricks, and how-tos – not about the basics of starting a podcast (you can get that anywhere), but about upping your production value and community and growing your show into one worthy of a spot in the Top 10 in iTunes.

  • Audio quality: Microphones, preamps, compressors, software, even how to make the room you record in sound better!
  • Workflow tips: Making your production as smooth and painless as possible
  • Interviews: Tips, tricks and industry secrets
  • Production elements: Music, voiceovers, bumpers, sounders
  • Listener interaction: turning your audience from passive consumers to a buzzing community

I’m giving away all my secrets. You won’t want to miss this or any of the sessions at OpenCamp. Get your tickets now!

Speaking at WordCamp Raleigh 2010

If you’re in the Raleigh, NC area (or even if you aren’t), I really encourage you to come check out WordCamp Raleigh on May 22nd and 23rd, 2010.

WordCamps are conferences for WordPress users, bloggers, and social media enthusiasts of all skill levels and backgrounds.

I’ll be talking on what I like to call “breaking the trust barrier” – basically, getting past first impressions and establishing yourself as a reliable source in social media, both personally and professionally. Here’s the little blurb from the Raleigh team’s post:

Dave has worked in tech and media since age twelve and experienced firsthand the stigma that comes along with being the “kid with a blog”.

Just like nearly all bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, and even twitterers, he started at square one: from scratch with no audience. Moving beyond square one and connecting with an audience takes time, effort, and careful control, especially when your age is considered a detractor.

Many of the barriers Dave has overcome and the experiences he had whilst growing and establishing both a personal and corporate identity in social media are universal, and can be applied to any individual or group.

This session is designed to share the lessons learned through Dave’s own experiences, and explain crucial points in breaking past notions of unreliability to establish one’s personal and professional presence as something that an audience can trust in, depend on, and turn to.

I’ll also be popping in on the SitePoint podcast’s live recording, vlogging for YouTube, as always, and running around and interviewing folks for WordCast.

If you’ve never been to a WordCamp before, they’re my favorite for a reason. (See myTop 8 Reasons Why WordPress Users Need to Get to a WordCamp.) If you’re interested in WordPress, blogging or any kind of emerging social media, they’re the place to go. It’ll be lots of fun, so if you can make it, come say hi!

Interview with Pixorial

I was out speaking at the CSIA DEMOGala 2009 just a few weeks ago, and I was dragged over by the folks at Pixorial to talk about what I do and how I got started in the digital media world. (Excuse the just rose from the from cold/flu dead look and feel- it’s snowy Colorado! Sometimes it just can’t be avoided!)

It’s a short little bit, but Melissa Hourigan’s post on Soci@lByte is too nice, and the folks at Pixorial are great. Look for an interview with them on Best of the Net from Bitwire Media soon!

Interview with Voices of the Past

When I was down in Texas for WordCamp Dallas 2009, I got the chance to talk to Jeffery Guin from the Voices of the Past on what I do at Bitwire and technology in education. I do workshops with various schools as often as I can and I work with many different educators and figures who affect students to help make learning connect to the 21st century world we live in. (My bit starts just about 3 minutes in)

Thanks to Jeff and the VotP team, and to John P. for his lovely backdrop that didn’t get as much use as he’d hoped. (AND to John’s lovely wife, Holly, for spending hours steam cleaning it!)
